About the Role
This is a primarily remote position for a litigation associate based in Southern California. You will be expected to manage a case load collaboratively with the firm’s principal while also being able to take on your own assignments with minimal hand-holding. This is a position for someone who is organized, creative, resourceful, and takes end-to-end ownership of their matters in a modern, technology-forward law practice within a broad range of practice areas including commercial litigation, business torts, real estate litigation, employment litigation, crisis management, and cryptocurrency litigation.
Responsibilities
- Handle a broad commercial and general litigation caseload in California state and federal court
- Draft and argue motions
- Conduct and defend depositions
- Manage client communications, court appearances, and case strategy with oversight
- Collaboratively develop general litigation and discovery strategy and draft and respond to discovery
- Research and analyze legal issues across substantive areas including commercial, tort, real estate, employment, and other civil disputes as they arise
- Coordinate with opposing counsel, courts, and vendors — without relying on support staff for routine tasks such as filing
- Adopt and use the firm's technology stack (case management, e-filing, document automation, legal AI tools) and contribute to improving how we work
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school
- Active admission to the State Bar of California in good standing
- At least one year of state court litigation experience with at least three years preferred and additional federal court litigation experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to draft motions independently and with minimal oversight
- Prior experience conducting and defending depositions
- Admission to at least one California federal district court, or willingness to seek admission promptly upon hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Comfort working in both state and federal court;
- Prior small-firm or boutique experience, or other high-autonomy practice setting, including an ability to manage document formatting, calendaring, and e-filing without secretarial support; and
- Experience with modern legal technology, including practice management platforms and AI-assisted research and drafting tools.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Resourceful — you figure things out before asking for help, and when you do ask, you come with a proposed answer
- Adaptable — your interests and skills span multiple practice areas, and you welcome work outside your comfort zone
- Quick on your feet — you can switch contexts, think on the fly in court or on a call, and recover and learn from mistakes
- Tech-forward — you actively look for ways technology can make your work better and faster, and you're comfortable adopting new tools
- Organized — you know where your deadlines, documents, and open issue stands at any given moment
- Self-starting — you manage your docket without being reminded, and you don't wait to be told what to do next
- Curious — you have an interest in learning about our client's industry areas, how the firm operates, new areas of law, and how to integrate technology into the practice of law
- Client-oriented — you understand that clients are real people and businesses with real problems, and you treat them that way
- Entrepreneurial — you have an interest in growing your practice and learning about the business of law
Compensation & Benefits
In addition to a base salary, we offer a competitive compensation package designed to reward both productivity and business development:
- Production bonus: quarterly bonuses paid for hours billed and collected above firm minimums
- Origination bonus: opportunity to develop and originate clients and earn a portion of fees generated from those clients
- Employer covers health insurance, Bar dues, MCLEs, professional association memberships, and malpractice insurance
- Paid time off: three weeks plus court holidays and reasonable sick leave
- Equity path: no promises in writing at the outset, but a genuine and openly discussed possibility based on performance, firm growth, and origination
